Artist's Statement

I am fascinated by the natural world- how things grow, develop and evolve, and how the particulars of a surrounding environment play such an intrinsic part to a final outcome- from seedlings to sedimentary rock formations.
It is this fascination I hope to express in my ceramic work. My forms are often bulbous, with my more recent work beginning to develop shoots- growing and stretching.
Each form is made by hand by either pinching or coiling the clay. The work is lightly burnished and then several layers of white terra sigilatta (a clay slip with very fine particles) are applied, which leaves the clay with a shiny white opaque surface. After the initial bisque firing the work is wrapped and bound with various leaves and vegetation and fired for a second time with plenty of combustibles surrounding them. It is this combination of vegetation, wood and sawdust, together with a little salt that creates the right environment to cause flashes of colour on the previously pure white surfaces. The patterns and colours within my work are unpredictable and although it would be possible to manipulate both colour and pattern to a certain extent, I choose not to, which I find adds to my intrigue of the process and the sense that it is the environment within in the kiln, that ultimately causes the final outcome.

Current Work and Availability

All work is made from a white earthenware clay and covered with several layers of a fine white terra sigillata slip. The work is then bisque fired, then fired for a second time in a gas kiln, often using saggars.
Gabrielle Jessica Frazer is currently exhibiting at The National Museum of Wales, Cardiff where work is available for purchase.
