Artist's Statement
I make what I enjoy making, this is a privilege I am aware of and try to show my appreciation by making carefully, with attention to form, movement, depth of colour and following traditional and aesthetic beliefs as used by English Studio Potters and the great Japanese potters . I am on a journey with clay, the moment I touched it and felt it slipping through my hands it spoke to me saying make something out of me. It responded to my every touch, sensitively or dramatically changing shape. I think I can make any shape but strive to make a good and strong shape. I know immediately when it is good and when it is not, when it is to be recycled or hopefully admired and fired. I want perfection to start with but then I let the nature of the clay show itself by leaving throwing rings, spontaneous curves and finger marks. I want to make an impact on the viewer using shape, size and colour. I love the idea that all the materials and glazes are from the earth. They are refined of course, but end up being a thing of beauty or a much admired and used piece. I decorate using layers of oxides, slip with sgraffito and multiple layers of stoneware glazes. Glazes are strong colours and deep in richness, interest and beauty. My journey continues all the time, the ideas keep on coming. I have been fortunate in my ceramic education and have studied and attended intensive workshops under a good few potters including George Wilson, David and Margaret Frith and Derek Emms and recently Gareth Mason and Phil Rogers. I am on a long path with far to travel and so much more to discover. My work evolves all the time, I hope this makes it seem fresh, surprising and different.
